Can Math Learning Secrets Help With Higher Maths?
--
The other day a homeschool parent emailed me asking if the Math Learning Secrets guide can help with the higher maths such as Algebra and Geometry. My short answer is yes. Math Learning Secrets gives you a 5-step framework helping you liberate your family from academic drudgery from not only unwanted math curriculum, but the rest of the subjects through child-led learning.

When I was in middle and high school, truth be told, I barely pulled a C in Algebra and Geometry. I feel very self-conscious sharing that with you, but, that just was how it was for me, and I know I’m not alone. I have had many hair pulling moments in my life, most especially with Algebra. Geometry came a bit more naturally. My own adopted brother and sister, Doug and Dianna, excelled in the higher maths. In school, I felt very ashamed of only pulling a C since I was typically an A student.
But, here’s the truth. Most people don’t use Algebra ever again in their adult lives. Geometry, on the other hand, is practical and beautiful since it’s found everywhere in the natural world from nataure’s numbers, patterns, and geometric shapes. I use a lot of geometry principles in my MathArt 4-course online unit study.
My top recommendations for learning the higher maths in a liberated way, which Math Learning Secrets lays out are the following:
- Gameschool the higher maths. You can find free games on Teacher’s Pay Teachers pretty much for every single math concept, including the higher maths such as Algebra and Geometry.
- Play DragonBox — Dragonbox is a brilliant app with high reviews covering all of K — 12 maths. Kids love it. It’s only $25 to have all of your maths covered with fun games. It has great reviews. I CAN’T WAIT to try it out.
Back in 2019, I lived and worked at Arthur Morgan School (AMS) a middle school in Burnsville, NC for 4 and 1/2 months as a boarding house parent and Pre-Algebra teacher. Every week, I used Teachers Pay Teachers’ free teacher-made games and downloaded them like crazy for my students. I found the games my students loved the most and laminated those.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t play the games as often as I would have liked since the school insisted I cover a curriculum. The school purchased one of the Teacher’s Pay Teachers Pre-Algebra curriculum for me to use. It was Okay. My students weren’t crazy about it so, I won’t recommend it, but, there’s plenty to search and sift through on the platform.
My Pre-Algebra class was held 4 days per week, so, I set aside Fridays as our game day. But, honestly, if I didn’t have to follow the school’s rules (the reason I hate working at a restrictive school), I would have had the kids playing the games every single class rather than listen to me lecture the other three days a week. It’s one off the huge reasons I left. I didn’t have enough freedom to do what I wanted according to my students interests. But, YOU, as a homeschooler do have the liberty! AMS is more curriculum driven in the maths fearing the kids won’t be ready for high school when they leave AMS. That’s a typical fear. You don’t have to hold onto that. In Math Learning Secrets, I help you shift your mindset towards looking for math everywhere around you and interweaving it along with the rest of the academics without necessarily having to use a curriculum.
