Why Do Homeschool Math History?

In 1997, I was at a used book sale casually browsing books to buy when I perused an old tattered book that changed my life. It’s a Time Life book simply called, Mathematics by David Bergamini. When I flipped open the cover of this blue warn out hardcover book, my eyes widened as I thumbed through it laden with beautiful illustrations about mathematics found in the real world all around us.

One thing, which I had never learned in school, which Mr. Bergamini did a thorough and amazing job was seeing mathematics through the eyes of history. This concept alone floored me since I had just gone through 12 years of mathematics and never once had a teacher show me any relationship with math and history.

Years later, beginning in 2003, after much trial and error, I created a unique yearlong course called MathArt. In MathArt, I introduce students to nature/Creation’s most famous numbers, the Fibonacci numbers (0, 1, 1, 3, 5, 8, 13…etc.) and the Golden ratio (1.618), a proportion of beauty found also in ancient architecture, and in famous artworks such as the Mona Lisa, Rembrandt’s portrait and beyond.

I introduce them to these maths through the eye of history. This not only brings the math to life, but, brings in a backdrop of “story”. Humans love stories and learn best through them. I weave the story of history through the MathArt yearlong course.
